In order for veins to be treated properly, exact location of venous reflux needs to be identified. This is accomplished by an advanced ultrasound imaging called Color Doppler Ultrasound. Color Doppler Ultrasound creates a “map” of your veins by pinpointing the location of the damaged valves. Ultrasound images are recorded in real time and therefore show movement of internal tissues and organs, such as the flow of blood in arteries and veins.
The ultrasound is painless and noninvasive. A patient is required to wear loose clothing, which will be provided by Chicago Vein Institute.
Dr. Sunje performs a thorough ultrasound which takes about 90 minutes. Based on the outcome, we can determine the best treatment plan for the patient.
EVLT™ is a minimally invasive laser procedure and is FDA approved. Under local anesthesia and with the assistance of ultrasound, a laser catheter is inserted into the saphenous vein through a tiny (1-2 mm) opening. The laser is slowly heated, and seals the damaged vein as the catheter is withdrawn. The procedure takes about 45 minutes and leaves no visible scars.

Endovenous Foam Treatment (EVFT™) is another comfortable and cost-effective alternative to varicose, telangiectasias and spider veins. With this new procedure, under ultrasound guidance, a slender catheter is inserted into the saphenous vein at the knee through a tiny needle stick in the skin. A special foam medication is then infused into the diseased vein. The foam irritates the lining of the vein causing it to contract and close, allowing blood to be rerouted to healthy veins. The treated vein then becomes harmless fibrous tissue and is gradually absorbed into the body.

Ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy eliminates unsightly and embarrassing spider veins of the legs. The procedure allows doctors to treat problematic veins that aren't visible on the skin surface by monitoring veins on an ultrasound screen during the sclerotherapy procedure. With the assistance of ultrasound and using an extremely fine and nearly painless needle, Dr. Sunje injects a small amount of a sclerosing solution into the affected veins. This causes the veins to gently dry up and become absorbed by the body's natural healing response. It usually takes 3-5 sessions to provide the most effective results. Treated veins gradually disappear over three to six months. Because blood flow is shifted to healthy veins, sclerotherapy can improve the circulation in the legs.

Micro-foam sclerotherapy is performed the same way as Ultra-Sound guided Sclerotherapy, but instead of using a sclerosing liquid to threat the affected vein, sclerosing foam is used.

Most insurances provide coverage for Laser Vein Treatment. If a written request is needed, we can assist you in obtaining the coverage for the procedures by providing a letter for the purposes of the treatment. To be covered means to demonstrate symptomatic venous reflux disease. That is presence of reflux on ultrasound scan, pain, swelling, leg cramps, ulcers, bleeding from varicosities.
Certain insurance companies may require 3-6 months of conservative therapy (compression stockings, elevation of legs, walking) before providing coverage for Laser Vein Treatment.
